Things like that happens a lot in the media scene.
Recently there was an episode like this in Korea.
It was announced that the leader of the local popular boy group "2PM" would be resigning from the group, due to negative comments by netizens regarding a statement he made years ago.
(LOOK AT THAT WASHBOARD ABS! (: )What happened was that Jaebum was raised in America ever since young and he only returned back to Korea in 2005, to complete his high school education. During his stay in Korea, he posted some offending comments about korea on his myspace page. This happened 4 years ago, yet netizens had to dig his page up and slammed him on the comments made so long ago.
This is a screenshot on what he wrote 4 years ago on his Myspace page
Offensive? yes of course, but that was before he got famous, yet people had to criticize him for a mistake done so long ago. Currently, he is only 22 years old, which makes him only 18 years old when he made the comment. How many 18 year olds would actually be think of being responsible for what they write online? Many do not even know that it might be offensive to others, thinking that things would not be in the spotlight. For Park JaeBum, he just ran out of luck.
Poor JaeBum has to return to America because of this silly mistake made in a moment of folly.
Another incident happened at the recent MTV Video Music Awards.
Apart from the Kanye West incident where he caught everybody by surprise by going up on stage and grabbing Taylor Swift's microphone, saying that Beyonce deserve the award instead of Taylor.
He regretted his actions after that. People said that he was drunk when he went on stage as his whole body reeked of alcohol and many of his pictures showed him holding to a bottle of liquor. Apparently he called Taylor a few days later to apologise for his misconduct.
Another incident that happened that on that very event was Lil' Mama going onto stage while Jay-z and Alicia Keys were performing their segment on stage.

Lil Mama soon apologised for her inappropriate behaviour. Everyone labelled her as "attention-seeker". Apparently, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys felt that by coming on stage it is actually a sign of disrespect and that it would be better if she had done all the admiration off stage.
In her apology statement, Lil Mama then said that she did not have any intentions of disrespecting the two, and that she was too overwhelm with excitement towards the two icons singing about New York, and in that moment, she went on stage to join them.
Were they all Clowns? or just simply Misunderstood?
So the next time before you do or say something, think about the consequences first.

This harsh world doesn't allow mistakes. People pick that little mistake that you made and talked about it for hours, but they neglect the 99 other good things that you have done.
ReplyDeleteSelf-serving biasness, a tendency in perception.
Still, everyone deserves another chance, right?
"The world only goes round by misunderstandings"
ReplyDeleteThis shows the cruelty of the world and i really pitied the star to have to endure the strict scrunity of the public eyes, which sadly cause the fall of his stardom.
ReplyDeleteAll his years of hard work has gone down the drain by some comment made during his immaturity years.
No human is perfect.
In Korea, internet web forums are very powerful ways of communication! I've heard of celebrities who get seriously destroyed by vicious internet flaming by netizens. In fact, there have been more than a few suicides by popular celebrities who have received harsh criticism through internet discussion sites.
ReplyDeleteThrough this you can see just how important the web can be in terms of communication. It can make or break a career!
people tend to say whatever they want and whenever they want to say it. It happens as they have the freedom of speech going on. As for Kanye West and Taylor Swift, drunk or not he should be in a state of mind that he shoud coain himself. Reeking of alcohol? He shold not have been there in the first place. And what happenned to security? Though they are huge celebrities they should ot have allowed anyone to barge in like that. Korea is a country where communication is strong. Therefore any form of communication there will be people taking it seriously.
ReplyDeleteThis show that people tend to remember the mistake you made no matter how much you try to covered it up, which usually happen to those famous people.
ReplyDeleteEven a mistake made 4 years ago was remembered by people.
Everybody do make mistakes! shouldn't he be given a chance?
jealousy comes with criticism
ReplyDeleteBeing a media figure requires you to portray an ever-so-perfect image, as your actions and words are often amplified. Many watch and scrutinize your behaviors through many means of communication these days. Your right to freedom of speech may often jeopardize your career.
ReplyDeleteAcquiring the talent of choosing your words and making the right decisions play a vital role, in your survival, in the media scene. Perceptions and views are hence needed to be kept within one's self.
Perceptions, especially political views, are also a sensitive topic media figures shun. Many Taiwanese artists are seen keeping mum about their political views when parliament elections are round the corner. Your political stand may cause a major uproar of mixed reactions and the masses' likes or dislikes against you, especially in countries like Taiwan.
Reality is cruel, people are ever so eager to throw ruthless comments to boycott you when they dislike you.
Ris Low, is a perfect example that was mercilessly ridiculed by the nation. Her poor command of English made the headlines. But then again, if she weren't the winner of a beauty pageant would anyone give a damn on how she speaks on national tv?
To sum it all, the media may entice many with fame and fortune. Yet, what price celebrities and media figures pay for choosing the spotlight is the responsibility of being perfect.
Ah, Park Jaebeom. At least that's something I'm familiar with. :D
ReplyDeleteAdmittedly, Jaebeom's words on his myspace weren't the most pleasant ones to read but I guess there were reasons behind his words. And Jaebeom, having grown up in America probably speak, think and behave as native Americans do. Sadly, his words were twisted out of context by netizens who obviously have too much time on their hands. They failed to understand that he'd left a place he called home to "work" in the motherland he never knew.
Korea is an extremely patriotic country and when they refer to their country they say it as "우리 나라" which translates as "our country". So I guess I can understnad the initial outburst at Jaebeom's comments.
Looking from Jaebeom's p.o.v, he was young, ignorant (well, more ignorant than he is now anyway) and extremely homesick.
I think it's in the public (or netizens in this case) to look at things on a case by case basis and not just jump into conclusions.
All it took was 4 days after the issue blew out of proportion to put him on a plane back to Seattle for a mistake he made 4years ago.
Pity.
Clouds : Yes,we all became so cruel and judgemental, its not even okay to make a mistake now. Most people only see the bad things and neglects the good ones. So maybe that is why there are so much politics and misunderstanding these days.
ReplyDeleteCharlene: Really? thats really a hard phrase to judge. I'm sure there are many other things in life that can make the world go round...
ReplyDeleteKate: yes, no human is perfect. Koreans tend to get very critical when it comes to their stars. That is the sad truth about being in the media. That is the price you pay.
ReplyDeleteghostwiththemost: Yea, there are reports of stars committing suicide because of what netizens said about them. Sadly this is still continuing and i wont be surprise if another case occurs. They should re-evaluate the way they criticise.
ReplyDeletedannydannydanny: Yes, he should not be that drunk in the first place, but how was the security suppose to know if he would barge onto stage and do such a mean thing. Kanye is a straightforward man, not afraid to say what he wants to say. This is his second time doing such a thing on stage. Personalities are hard to change.
ReplyDeleteKArlyn: yeah, like they say, forgiven but not forgotten. Even if given a chance, the matter would be brought up again and again. It would be a scar to him then. Sadly, We are always remembered for our mistakes.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous: Well that is true in a sense. Without jealously why would people wnat to start a fire over nothing. Very human of us.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous: Well yea i guess people in the media choose this path so they would have to embrace what happens after that. Everyone becomes a role model when they step into the media light. That is inevitable. However, Ris Low would have to improve on her english to be an ambassador. That is even bigger than a role model. She would be representing the country! You earned the fame, you has to embrace everything that hits you after fame.
ReplyDeleteIn this society, we are encouraged to practice freedom of speech. We tend to say what we feel as and when we like. And of course, Jaebeom has the freedom to do so too.
ReplyDeleteHow can we expect a 18 years old young chap Jaebeom to foresee himself being a star now?
It’s a way of how he share his thoughts with others when he is young, people shouldn’t have penalised him for his behavior. After all, it’s not as if Jaeboem kills somebody.
Being a star is tough. Media will take every opportunity to capture all the stars' action and word and make a story out of it.
Poor Jaeboeom is probably one of the many victims who suffer.
covermeblack: yea, a pity that people rush to conclusions about a person without finding the real reason behind it. Jaebeom was really caught out of place, i bet he didnt even know what hit him when everything happened. A childish mistake made in the past, had to just come back and haunt him causing him to lose his career. Poor kid.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous : yes, Freedom of speech can be good and at the same time be harmful. Exactly 18 year old JaeBeom didnt know the consequences of what he said! Now its all back to make him lose his job. Jaebeom is indeed a victim of the critical media in this current era.
ReplyDeleteAlthough it seems that it is very ridiculous to dig up Jaebum's past mistake to "attack" him, netizens just love to do this, believe me. This is always the case in Korea. I just don't understand why netizens' negative comments are so important. They have the ability to force someone to resign from the group when other countries such as Japan does not work this way. This is definitely baffling to many, including me. Perhaps the perception of Jaebum by the others stayed with him since that comment was made. Hence, no matter what good deed he did from then till now, people perceived him as a thoughtless guy in his words. Also, I believe that his stay in America contributes towards others having a bad perception on him.
ReplyDeleteI believe everyone is answerable for their actions and in the case of a star, when u are a public figure, the responsiblity is much higher as there are fans out there that look up to you as role models. So for all the above case mention, it could be just pple slamming them and for the fact they are stars, they get slammed harder, but then again, you do it... you face the consequences, no two ways around it...
ReplyDeleteI had about this korean guy. My sister was telling me about it and saying how he actually made that comment because he felt lonely and weird in Korean because after all, he did grow up in USA. Not used to the place i guess. and just because of what he said, even before he got famous people started to dig it out and make a big fuss. poor guy.
ReplyDeleteHow many times have you seen someone comment somewhere that he/she hates singapore? but does anything happen after that? apparently not. why? because they are just unknown people. so what makes those singers/actors different from us? are they not humans too? is it too harsh on them from us to be so critical of them? they are humans too, and humans make mistakes.
There have been times when i said/did something that in the end i regretted. but no one is perfect and even thou i regretted saying or doing something, its not because of the consquences or outcome of what i said or did. so i guess it can be forgiven. but if its those people who did it without thinking of the consequences or outcome, they shouldnt be forgiven that easily. because they didnt bother to think in the first place so why bother forgiving them. and i think people who does things without thinking of consequences are stupid people.
Hi Sarah
ReplyDeleteI think that the more popular people are, the more they are subjected to scrutiny. Nonetheless, their acions were foolish and juvenille, considering their status in the media.
They should know better.
