Remember her?!
yes, how can we not know the very famous, or rather infamous person in Singapore, Miss Ris Low.
Recently the local media really focused their attention onto this icon who was to be representing Singapore under the title of "Miss Singapore World". That was soon withdrawl under circumstances that found Miss Ris Low guilty of credit card fraud. At the same time her language use and pronunciation for english words were also under the scrutiny of the public because they felt that with her standard of english, it would not be appropriate for her to be an ambassador of Singapore.
After all the drama, Miss Ris Low was given a chance and placed under probation for her crimes, at the same time she told the public that she was suffering from a bipolar disorder hence that made her commit the crime.
How much of this is actually true?
Take a look at this video. This was the video that got everyone talking about her.
As you can see, her english was pretty bad in this video, creating new lingos that everyone just had to follow. Things like "Boomz" and "Preenz"
Despite these videos and news reports on how bad Miss Ris Low is, is she really as bad as how they portray her to be? Maybe they have taken out the other interlectual parts and only placed in the ugly side of her just to please the target market and attain maximum viewship. Perhaps there is just the other side of her that we all don't know of.
Suddenly everyone just harps on her negative side rather than a balance view on her, and even celebrities start to make spoofs out of her.
Just like this one! (Which I truely like) It was an promotional video for the upcoming comedy Phua Chu Kang.
As you can see, they just had to make fun of Miss Ris Low and adopted her speech.
Everyone now has their opinion of Miss Ris Low tainted, with thanks to the media, but have we all gotten the wrong idea?
One thing's for sure, I still do not see her in any positive light, and that Miss Ris Low seems to be enjoying herself with such media attention, hence appearing on more shows just to add on to the drama.
just like this one!
Good job on her part, just don't come crying when things get out of hand!

I can't believe she did another interview, this time it makes her look worse than before. I admire Ris's courage but this is way too humiliating. She's just trying to milk her reputation. I think her next publicity stunt would be a sex video or something. Then maybe she can pull a Paris and start to sing and break out a music album or two.
ReplyDeleteThe media in Singapore just doesn't seem to get enough of her. It's sad that Singapore has nothing better to talk about than Ris Low. I think we all need to move on. This whole Ris Low saga is really frustrating!
HAHA. Media shows us what we want to see and if they show the "Good" side of her that she might have (who knows), would everyone still be talking about her? will the views of her videos sky-rocketed? I dont think so.
ReplyDeleteGuess that just how media world works, and how we humans work. we see the negative side of people and make a big fuss but when we see the positive side, we just think normal or boring.
its kind of crooked how people base their entertainment and joy on others negative side or bad side. kind of like how if someone falls and injured herself, others would just stand there and laugh at her stupidly rather than helping her. hmmm. ugly side of human i guess?
Well, i guess it might be true that the media might have just been emphasising on her negative side too much. But then again, Ris Low is also jeopardizing her own reputation by taking on more talk shows like this. Seriously, i am appalled by this last video of her SHINGZ, LIKE OMG!?!?!?
ReplyDeletePerhaps, the media has part to blame but part of it should be apportioned to Ris Low herself too. The media functions to give us entertainment and in this case, Ris Low gives us entertainment and laughter, sad to say. Furthermore, the agenda setting function of the media has attached significance of Ris Low to us in many ways so repititively it is difficult to ignore this whole saga. Hopefully, this will just be another passing facade.
i think the only people NOT getting anything good outta this entire saga is the mass public.
ReplyDeleteand the reason why its dragggging since forever is because media and other exploiters want to make money outta it.
media is money-driven, well everyone is money driven for that matter!
i mean, look at those shops like new urban male are trying to boost sales by having apparel with the "boomz" word.
and i guess ris low's not suffering THAT much, afterall, she gets free lessons sponsored AND be an ambassor for speak good english!
gee,Boomz much?
i guess it doesnt hurt sg to have such comical beings ard giving purely clearly fun and entertainment to the boring citizens beings of sg... so theres no reason why de media shldnt take this chance to prolly blow up de matter which may seems to be jus a small interview?
ReplyDeletei mean like even Taiwan Media is doing so to an gal name hui ci who is clearly making a fool out of herself.
so i guess that if this is wad is it to be in de LIME LIGHT~!! so shingz...
I would definitely say she can claim the seat after Steven Lim as the most attention seeking person in Spore. Kudos to her courage thou...
ReplyDeleteI might not be in Singapore but the boomz and the shingz have been mentioned more often than not to make me not know what this whole boooomz saga is about.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is true that the media has been emphasizing on her negative side way too much. Her videos were all over Youtube, face plastered over newspaper pages etc. What good would it do to the media? Money, which is kind of understandable.
I thought this thing whole saga died down but not long after - people started imitating her. What good would it do to them, I wonder why! Making fun of Ris Low herself or trying to make a fool of themselves? Sillyporeans!
Hi Sarah,
ReplyDeleteYes I do agree that the media has a very large advantage in influencing people's view on certian issues. Take for example the Aware saga, the media was mostly on the old guards side and portraying the new comittee in a negative light. Thus, there was such an influx of support for the old guards.
As for Ris Low, I think that to a certain degree, despite all the negative criticism that she is facing, I somehow get the feeling that she is busking in it..
i think that Ris low should stop all these publicity. isnt it bad enough? oh well, its the entertainment industry after all. they use the media to convey messages to the public. you can see how effective the media is just by counting the number of people who know about ris low. the influence is really that great!
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah
ReplyDeleteI think it's normal for society to laugh and poke fun at Ms Ris Low. However, for the media to do the same is really low and juvenile. Especially Phua Chu kang. Why, he's the supposed national icon, but yet he uses the dismal state of Ms Ris Low to make humor out of it. Is he so short of talent to create humor himself? To me, that's low, that's cheap.
Indeed media may not provide accurate depictions of reality. In fact, it was revealed later that she was suffering from bipolar disorder. But, that itself is questionable - is she using it as an excuse?
The safest bet is to take all media information with a pinch of salt.
I think Ris Low is enjoying getting all the attention on her now.
ReplyDeletePutting the negative stuff aside, she is actually earning with all these publicity going on.
Look at the "Speak Good English Campaign" which she is appointed the spokesperson.
And she has to thank the media for these.
It may seem that the media is hurting her with the remarks and reporting all her wrong doings, but in another point of view she is getting known by a lot of singaporeans now.
So how can we not agree that media is turning the world around nowadays?
Alternative media is a double edged sword.
ReplyDeleteWell, it really depends on how one looks at it.
Though many may condemn Ris Low's video as a total disgrace to all Singaporeans, considering that the word "Bimbo" can be used to its fullest extend in this situation, Ris Low might feel otherwise. As the internet is the best source for such media publicity, even if it carries a negative connotation along with it, since bad publicity is still a form of publicity.
BOOMZ and SHINGZ FOR THAT!
Really though, I don't know who came up with the idea but marketting ris low as a comedian just might be the only way to save her celebrity status.
ReplyDeleteThe same way paris hilton has (quite cleverly) exploited hher sleazy notoriety to break her way into chick flicks and slapstick comedy and b-grade reality series, being an intentional laughing stock (which really is being a respected comedian) might be her only hope.
